ITP Aero receives the Retina ECO award for its turbine for the engines of the future

The UltraFan turbine project developed by ITP Aero has been distinguished with the Retina ECO 2022 Award in the Smart Mobility category. The jury of these important Prisa Group awards highlighted the additive 3D printing technology that the company has used to manufacture the components of the TBH (Tail Bearing Housing), one of the main structures of the engine, as well as the implementation of removable acoustic attenuation panels to minimise the noise emitted by the turbine.

ITP Aero’s own cutting-edge technological solutions have made it stand out among the more than 100 projects submitted for the second edition of these awards, which were presented last night at the Official College of Architects of Madrid. Carlos Alzola, CEO of the company, received the Sustainable Mobility award from HM Queen Letizia. During the ceremony, Teresa Ribera, Third Vice-President of the Government and Minister for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, stressed that “Having the combination of the intelligent use of resources, taking advantage of the technologies available to us, but without forgetting the context in which these technologies are useful, is crucial”.

This reaffirms ITP Aero’s commitment to innovation to move towards the decarbonisation of the aviation sector, in line with its commitment to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050. In addition to promoting the sector’s sustainability objectives by joining various programmes promoted by the European Union and the UN, the company has participated with its own technology in the ambitious engine of the future.

This work has materialised in the design, production, assembly and delivery to Rolls-Royce of the intermediate pressure turbine that will be used in the new family of UltraFan engines. These engines, which will run on 100% sustainable fuel (SAF-Sustainable Aviation Fuel), will be up to 25% more efficient and reduce perceived noise by 65%, in line with the company’s and the aviation industry’s own sustainability goals. The company’s own design and manufacturing criteria have also enabled a 25% material saving in their manufacture compared to other current production processes.

This is therefore an important technological milestone for the Spanish aviation sector, as the entire process has been carried out at ITP Aero’s plants in the Basque Country and Madrid. The turbine, which has already been delivered to Rolls-Royce, is currently at the British company’s facilities in Derby (UK), where the first tests are being carried out on the prototype demonstrator engine.
