ITP Aero has today become a founding member of the European Union’s “European Partnership for Clean Aviation” programme, also known as Clean Aviation, for the decarbonisation of the aeronautical sector. The programme, based on a public-private partnership, aims at pushing research and technological advances towards high impact demonstration, supported by €1.7 billion worth of public funding. The partners other than the EU will contribute additionally to the initiative with at least €2,4 billion by delivering additional programmes of work and co-funding Clean Aviation activities. The ultimate goal is to achieve zero net greenhouse gas emissions in European aviation by 2050.
As a Founding Member, ITP Aero will participate as an independent company in the strategic orientation and implementation of operations and activities, as well as in the decision-making body, the Governing Board of Clean Aviation.
Clean Aviation seeks to transform the aeronautical sector through the development of ambitious zero and low emission technologies. The programme identifies three main technologies that will make this possible:
- Hybrid and electric architectures by promoting research into new hybrid electric engine architectures and their integration; and maturing technologies towards the demonstration of new configurations, on-board energy concepts and flight control.
- Ultra-efficient aeronautical architectures to address short and medium haul needs with innovative gas turbine configurations to help reduce emissions. In this sense, it is worth highlighting the technological milestones that ITP Aero is meeting in the Rolls-Royce UltraFan® programme, a new aero-engine architecture that will set a new standard for efficiency and environmental performance, reducing fuel consumption by 25% compared to the Trent engine family currently in service
- Disruptive technologies for hydrogen-powered aircraft. To enable aircraft and engines to exploit the potential of hydrogen as an alternative fuel.
In terms of deadlines, the agenda sets two key dates for achieving zero net emissions in the sector:
- In 2030, with the demonstration and introduction of low-emission aircraft concepts that exploit the results of clean aviation research, making use of sustainable fuels and optimising ‘green’ operations, so that these innovations can be offered to airlines and operators by 2030 with entry into service within 2030-2035.
- In 2050, with emission-neutral aviation, through future technologies matured together with the full deployment of sustainable aviation fuels and alternative energy.
