ITP Aero and Code.org train promising young programmers at their technology campus

For the second year running, the aeronautical company is organising this BOOTCAMP – a technology campus – that promotes the learning of programming and computer language among boys and girls aged 9 to 14.

This initiative is part of the agreement between ITP Aero and the Code.org movement, a global organisation that has the support of social, economic and political leaders, as well as some of the most important companies in the world.

This year, several schoolchildren from the Bilbao La Vieja neighbourhood have obtained scholarships to participate in the technology campus thanks to a collaboration initiative with the Bakuva Association.

Through this type of activity, the company reinforces its commitment to promoting STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) scientific vocations.

ITP Aero reaffirms its commitment to bringing programming and computer language to the new generations with a new edition of its BOOTCAMP -summer technology camp- for children, which is being held during the first fortnight of July in Bilbao. After a successful first edition in which some thirty schoolchildren aged between 9 and 14 took part, the Bizkaia Provincial Council’s facilities in the Beaz space (Bilbao) have once again opened their doors to host this event in which the schoolchildren have had the opportunity to work side by side with the programmers to give shape to their own ideas and projects.

This innovative technology campus is part of ITP Aero’s agreement with Code.org, a non-profit organisation that works to encourage young people to learn programming. Thus, ITP Aero became the first Spanish industrial company to join this global movement that has the support of social, economic and political leaders and some prominent companies such as Telefónica and Asti Robotics in Spain or Facebook, Amazon, Dropbox and Microsoft in the United States.

It should be noted that ITP Aero has offered 30 scholarships for interested families and has made a selection of places for children of employees of its facilities in Bizkaia. This year, the company has also launched a collaboration initiative with the Bakuva Association to offer scholarships to several schoolchildren with whom the NGO works. In this way, ITP Aero is highlighting the long history of this organisation, which works to promote the development and integration of children in the Bilbao La Vieja neighbourhood.

This BOOTCAMP adds to the long list of activities through which ITP Aero wants to reinforce its commitment to promoting STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) scientific vocations, promoting public-private collaboration with universities and technology centres.

Programming, the language of the present

Professional profiles associated with programming are in high demand in today’s job market. In fact, at a time like the present, it is more important than ever to develop the digital competencies and skills needed to access these jobs. In Spain, however, 8 out of 10 parents and 7 out of 10 children still do not know what Computer Science is and what the associated subjects are, according to the data provided by the report ‘Computer Science Education in Spain 2015’. Therefore, training and attracting talent are essential factors to address the present and future challenges posed by this digital era.

The non-profit organisation Code.org focuses its work precisely on expanding this knowledge of the Computer Science environment to schools around the world, so that all students have the opportunity to add this subject as part of their basic education. The response has been very successful, with more than 55 million students and 2 million teachers with profiles on the platform and more than 1.1 billion hours of code completed worldwide.
