July 6, 2023ITP Aero and Code.org bring computational thinking to schoolchildren in Bilbao
ITP Aero and Code.org, in collaboration with the Bilbao City Council, are launching a new edition of the Bootcamp – technological campus – that brings computational thinking to schoolchildren between 9 and 14 years of age in Bilbao. In this new edition, and thanks to the collaboration of the aeronautical company and Bilbao City Council, children from Kidegune in Basurto, Gaztegune in Otxarkoaga and Makergunea in La Perrera will also participate. This campus will take place in the “La Perrera” building, in Bilbao.
Thus, from 3 to 14 July, they will have the opportunity to learn everything related to programming and computer language in a fun way and with a pioneering methodology that awakens the interest of the youngest. In addition, the schoolchildren will visit the ITP Aero headquarters in Zamudio, where they will be able to see the facilities and learn first-hand about the aeronautics sector and the application of computing in this field.
This innovative technology campus is part of the agreement that ITP Aero has with the non-profit organisation, Code.org, which works to promote the learning of programming among schoolchildren all over the world, and will be held simultaneously, on the same dates, at the ITP Aero centre in Ajalvir (Madrid), with the corresponding visit to the facilities.
After the success of the previous editions of this technology campus in Bilbao and Ajalvir and the “Hour of Code” meetings with Code.org, ITP Aero wanted to go a step further in its commitment to promoting computer language among schoolchildren, so this year it will also take this initiative to its work centres in the United Kingdom, in early August, and to Mexico, on September. Thus, for the first time, English and Mexican children will have the opportunity to learn about this universal language with Code.org.
Helena Echavarri, Director of Training at Code.org, comments: “We are very grateful for the collaboration with ITP Aero, which is organising these Bootcamps for the third year, not only in Bilbao, but also in Madrid, the United Kingdom and Mexico. They teach problem solving and develop creativity and logical thinking, fundamental skills for the career future of our children“.
Code.org is a global movement that has the support of social, economic and political leaders from all over the world and prominent companies such as Telefónica, Asti Robotics, Facebook, Amazon, Dropbox and Microsoft, among others. ITP Aero was the first Spanish industrial company to join this technological movement.
It is worth remembering that profiles associated with programming are currently in high demand in the market, as well as being quality, well-paid jobs with the capacity for professional development.
ITP Aero’s collaboration with Code.org is part of our commitment to promote STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) vocations among young people and is in line with ITP Aero’s strategic aim of becoming a world-class ESG company.
For Erlantz Cristóbal, Executive Director of Technology and Engineering at ITP Aero: “in an increasingly digitalised world, promoting programming among young people is the best way to prepare them for the future. As a world leading aeronautical engine company, we are very aware of the need to promote STEM related activities amongst the younger generations, they will be the ones who will shape the future of aviation”.
According to the Report of the Observatory of Computer Science in Spain 2022 prepared by Code.org and Deloitte, 77% of those surveyed agree that teaching all children computer science opens up job opportunities and reduces the cultural, socio-economic and gender inequalities that currently exist. For all these reasons, it is essential to awaken our schoolchildren’s interest in computer language and to enable them to develop digital competences and skills.
