June 18, 2020ITP Aero formalizes its participation in the NGWS/FCAS programme
This morning, the Secretary of State for Defence, Mr. Ángel Olivares and the CEO of ITP Aero, Carlos Alzola, signed the General Protocol of Action between the Spanish Ministry of Defence and ITP Aero for the Next Generation Weapon System/Future Combat Air System [NGWS/FCAS] project. The signing ceremony took place at the headquarters of the Ministry of Defence alongside the leading companies of the project’s seven technological pillars: Airbus, Indra, ITP Aero and the consortium of companies made up of GMV, Sener and Tecnobit.
The aim of the General Protocol of Action is to determine the parameters and conditions under which ITP Aero is part of the NGWS/FCAS project. Besides the responsibilities derived from its designation as leader of the engine technology pillar, the Protocol contains the framework with which ITP Aero will coordinate the national industry, national technology centres and universities for the development of strategic and transversal industrial and technological capacities, in line with the interests of the Ministry of Defence. The Protocol also includes the scope of ITP Aero’s contribution to the rest of the project’s technological pillars, with the aim of Spain reaching an appropriate level of strategic autonomy in this area.
During the ceremony, Carlos Alzola, CEO of ITP Aero, commented: “It is a great honour for us to formalise, together with the Secretary of State, our participation in the NGWS/FCAS programme as the leading Spanish company in the engine technology pillar. This is a great opportunity for Spanish industry, which will require effort, investment and development of new technologies and capabilities. As the leading Spanish aeronautical engine company, we are proud to collaborate with the rest of the industries and technology centres in the development of new industrial and technological capabilities for Spain, and to contribute to our strategic autonomy in the Defence field”.
More about the NGWS/FCAS project
The NGWS/FCAS goes beyond the development of a new generation fighter aircraft (NGF), as it is a system of systems, an integrated environment in which aircraft, unmanned aircraft, land vehicles, marine vehicles, remote carriers and satellites can operate together, depending on the characteristics of each mission.
The NGWS/FCAS project has seven technological pillars for the development of technologies and demonstrators between 2020 and 2030, prior to the launch of the development and production of the whole system.
In February 2020, the Spanish Ministry of Defence announced Spain’s participation in the NGWS/FCAS, after the country signed up for the programme during the Paris Air Show (June 2019).
ITP Aero, as a leading company of aeronautical engines in Spain, will work together with its German and French counterparts for the first phase of development of propulsion technology and demonstrators of the programme.
