ITP Aero is leading a new research project called TASTE (Aerodynamic Technologies for TurboFan Gears) which aims to develop key aerodynamic technologies to meet the deadlines of the Rolls-Royce UltraFan™ programme and the environmental milestones set by the European Union.
The UltraFan programme is based on the development of a new aircraft engine architecture that will set a new standard for efficiency and environmental performance, reducing fuel consumption by 25% compared to the Trent engine family currently in service.
The project, which begins this year and ends in 2023, is an initiative involving ITP Aero (project leader), the Centre for Aeronautical Technologies (CTA), the Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM) and the University of the Basque Country (UPV) through the Centre for Advanced Aeronautical Manufacturing (CFAA). The project has been approved by the Ministry of Science of the Spanish Government and financed by the programme “Spanish Strategy for Science and Technology and Innovation 2013-2020”.
The TASTE project will achieve the environmental milestones set by the European Union through ACARE (Advisory Council for Aviation Research and Innovation in Europe). The objectives include a 75% reduction in CO2 emissions per kilometer/passenger, a 90% reduction in NOx emissions, and a 65% reduction in aircraft noise by 2050.
