November 18, 2022Spanish Air and Space Force’s “Patrulla Águila” flies on sustainable aviation fuel
Patrulla Águila has used sustainable aviation fuel for the first time in the air parade of the Spanish National Day.
The Spanish Air and Space Force has always been firmly committed to respecting the environment in the development of its missions and operations. As proof of this, in 2018 it obtained UNE-EN ISO 14001 certification.
Within this context, the Spanish Air and Space Force is leading a technical working group with Repsol and ITP Aero, with the aim of promoting technological activities related to Sustainable Aviation Fuel (biojet)
The biojet, produced by Repsol in Spain, is a further step in the Spanish Air and Space Force’s collaboration with the multi-energy company to promote the use of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF).
Thus, the project to use co-processed sustainable fuel, entirely produced in Spain, begins to bear fruit with the flight of the Patrulla Águila during the Spanish National Day.
The batch of biofuel from which the biojet is made has been manufactured from biomass and meets the quality requirements established by international specifications. It has also passed the demanding tests carried out over the last few months by both Repsol and the Spanish Air and Space Force, the latter at the Maestranza de Albacete test bench, with the collaboration of ITP Aero.
This milestone is part of the “Connected, Sustainable and Intelligent Air Base” (BACSI) project. A Spanish Air and Space Force project in which ITP Aero is participating and which aims to increase the effectiveness, productivity, efficiency and sustainability of air bases.
This is a first step towards making further progress with other promising sustainable fuel technologies in aviation, produced entirely in Spain, which will position Spain as a leading nation in this field, and to which the Spanish Air and Space Force is fully committed.
